How to choose art that speaks to you (and why it matters)

Updated: Aug 4

We all know that art can brighten up a wall, but the right piece can do so much more than that. It can comfort, inspire, and remind us of who we are. As an artist who leans into painting animals with a touch of whimsy, I often hear people at my art fairs say they have a hard time choosing what to purchase. So let’s talk about how to choose a piece that truly speaks to you—whether you’re decorating your first apartment, updating your office, or just adding a little joy to your day.

Choosing Art That Speaks to You

Notice What Makes You Feel Something

Believe it or not, the best art choices aren’t about matching your couch or filling a blank spot. They’re about emotion. When you see a piece and it makes you smile, feel calm, or just feel seen, that’s your clue. Ask yourself:

  • Does this make me feel more like myself?

  • Does it spark joy, peace, or curiosity?

  • Is there a story or memory it brings to mind?

If the answer is yes, that’s the art you want in your space.

Follow the Animals (Or Whatever Shows Up!)

Sometimes the art chooses you. If you keep noticing a certain animal, color, or scene showing up in your life, pay attention because there may be meaning behind it. I’ve had collectors tell me they felt drawn to a particular animal in my work only to realize later it symbolized strength, freedom, or a sense of calm that they were craving. You don’t have to overthink it; just let your instincts lead the way.

Don’t Worry About the Rules

There are no “art rules” you have to follow. You don’t need a gallery wall, matching frames, or a color palette to choose something that feels right. You can hang a tiny print above your coffee maker or prop a canvas on your nightstand. Art is personal. Let it show up in ways that feel natural to you.

Let Your Space Tell a Story

Over time, the art you collect becomes part of your personal story. Every piece, whether it’s a painting, a postcard, or a doodle on a napkin, adds to the atmosphere of your space and your life. It reflects your spirit, your seasons, and your sense of wonder.

When you choose art that resonates, your space becomes more than decorated—it becomes alive.

At the end of the day, the right art is the one that makes you feel something. It doesn’t have to be trendy or fancy. It just has to be you.

Finding Your Unique Style

Art is a reflection of who you are. It’s an expression of your personality, your experiences, and your dreams. When selecting art, consider what resonates with you on a deeper level.

  • Explore Different Styles: Don’t limit yourself to one genre. Explore various styles, from abstract to realism. Each piece can evoke different feelings and memories.

  • Consider the Colors: Colors can significantly impact your mood. Choose pieces that incorporate colors you love or that create the atmosphere you desire in your space.

  • Think About the Size: The size of the artwork matters. A large piece can serve as a focal point, while smaller pieces can create a gallery feel.

The Importance of Connection

Art is not just about aesthetics; it’s about connection. When you find a piece that speaks to you, it can create a bond that lasts for years.

  • Personal Stories: Many artworks have stories behind them. Understanding the artist's journey or the inspiration behind a piece can deepen your connection to it.

  • Emotional Resonance: A piece that evokes a strong emotional response can become a cherished part of your life. It can remind you of a special moment or person.

Art as a Conversation Starter

Art can also serve as a great conversation starter. When you have guests over, the pieces you choose can spark discussions and share your story.

  • Share Your Favorites: Talk about why you chose certain pieces. Share the emotions they evoke or the memories they bring back.

  • Invite Opinions: Ask your friends what they think about your art choices. Their perspectives might offer new insights.

Incorporating Art into Everyday Life

Art doesn’t have to be confined to walls. Consider incorporating it into your everyday life in creative ways.

  • Functional Art: Look for art that serves a purpose, like beautifully designed furniture or unique kitchenware.

  • Wearable Art: Consider wearing art through clothing or accessories that reflect your style and personality.

  • Art in Nature: Bring art outdoors with garden sculptures or decorative planters.

Whether it’s a portrait of a wolf with flowers in her fur or a zebra with a Zebra finch perched atop his ear, I hope you keep choosing pieces that bring you a little magic and a lot of meaning.

Do you have a favorite piece that’s stayed with you for years? I’d love to hear about it!
